Provost’s Common Curriculum Grant Competition for NEW COURSES
The University Senate recently approved the new Common Curriculum (CC) for Leadership and Global Citizenship to launch in Fall 2025, and the time has come to develop NEW COURSES for the CC Topics of Inquiry (TOIs). (For details of the approval, please see the University Senate CCC+ page).
There will be two separate grant competitions this year, one for revising existing courses that will transition to TOIs, and one for proposing brand new courses that will carry a TOI. This CFP is for NEW courses. The maximum amount that can be requested per course is $6500. You may submit more than one grant if you will be developing more than one course.
Proposal Form for New Courses
Budget Form for New Courses
In order to be considered for this grant, courses must be brand new to UConn’s curriculum. All courses will be considered on their own merits, but we also highly encourage proposals for courses that:
- Serve large numbers of students,
- Are offered at multiple campuses, and/or
- Fulfill the new TOI-1 Creativity: Design, Expression, Innovation area
Another area of interest is courses that might be considered for a Theme. The selection committee would be interested in seeing proposals that seek to create one or more courses with the specific goal of using them in a Theme. You may submit multiple proposals if you are proposing more than one course.
Proposals will be judged on the following main criteria:
- Clarity of the project’s objectives
- Relevance of the objectives for the Common Curriculum, both the overall purpose of the curriculum as well as the criteria specific to the TOIs
- Enhancement of the Common Curriculum
- Innovative or creative elements
- Plan for evaluation of student learning
- Appropriateness of budget
Proposal Submission
Each proposal should include:
- Thorough but concise answers to the questions in the proposal form (see supplied form for technical guidelines and requirements)
- A budget (using the supplied form) that gives a reasonably detailed explanation of how funds will be used
- An emailed statement of support (see template) from the department or unit head of each dept/unit involved (i.e. a course that is cross-listed with another department should have two statements of support, etc.).
Due Date
Proposals are due by 11:59pm on November 17, 2023. (DEADLINE EXTENDED!)
Submission
An electronic copy of the proposal, including the budget, should be sent to commoncurr@uconn.edu with the Subject Line “New Course Proposal - Provost’s Common Curriculum Grant.” Emails of support can be sent separately, but please be advised that proposals will not be considered for funding until the emails of support are received.
Evaluation Committee
Proposals will be reviewed by a committee of faculty and representatives from CCC+ subcommittees, the Instructional Design and Development Group in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and colleagues with expertise in related areas.
Requirements for Awarded Proposals
Faculty who receive funding for their proposal will still need to submit a Curriculum Action Request (CAR) form and full syllabus for the course approval process once course development is complete. They must also submit a final report by the specified deadline (August 1, 2023). Awardees will be encouraged to avail themselves of Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning resources in instructional design.

Provost’s Common Curriculum Grant Application for COURSE REVISIONS
The University Senate recently approved the new Common Curriculum (CC) for Leadership and Global Citizenship to launch in Fall 2025, and the time has come to start transitioning existing General Education courses into the new CC Topics of Inquiry (TOIs)! (For details of the approval, please see the University Senate CCC+ page).
In recognition that transition efforts will be labor-heavy undertakings, the Provost’s Office has made funds available to departments and units to aid in this work. There will be two separate grants available this year, one for revising existing courses that will transition to TOIs, and one for proposing brand new courses that will carry a TOI. This CFP is for course revisions, and it should be submitted on behalf of the department as a whole. (Please see the application for details on who can submit.) Departments can request between $1,000 to $30,000 as appropriate.
Application Form for Course Revisions
Budget Form for Course Revisions
In order to be considered for this funding, courses included in the application must:
- Currently exist and carry a CA1, CA2, CA3/CA3-L, CA4/CA4-I, or EL designation, OR
- Currently exist as a non-Gen Ed and plan to become part of the CC by adding a TOI
Courses listed in this application should be ones that need a significant amount of work in order to be revised from their current form/designation to a TOI. If a course will transition fairly easily with little revision, please do not include it.
NOTE: Courses that are only W or Q that will have no TOIs should not be included in this application. All courses proposed for this grant should carry one or two TOIs. The maximum number of TOIs a course can carry is two.
We highly encourage work on courses that:
